Scholastic Programming

Programs have been implemented to emphasize the need for academic improvement and to reward students who excel in school.

Team-Power-Reading Program

The program’s slogan of “Stronger through Knowledge” has been successful as over 100 students have registered for their first library card in the past 3 years.  Personnel from the Bridgeport Public Library are present at the McGivney Community Center to assist BCYL  members in obtaining a library card.

Every year BCYL provides books to all participants in the Basketball League and asks the players to write an essay on the book.  Students in the Baseball League are given an opportunity to write an essay on a book they have read, on a personal hero or a specific theme.  All participants are commended and the top essays are recognized.  We expect to be able to also provide all players in the Baseball league with books.

BCYL would like to congratulate all members who participated in last year’s Team Power Reading program writing exercise.  As a reward for participating, all writers were treated to a Mets game.  (Attached are the stories.)

This year we kicked off the "I'm Going to College" campaign to educate our members to preparing themselves for a better future by attending college.  BCYL provides educational resources to our members and wants everyone to take full advantage of them.  Players were given a CD titled “Hija, you must go to college” and encouraged all members to view the CD and write down the message they got from the CD.  All of the authors were also treated to the recent Mets game.

Contents of the CD can be accessed by clicking on the link below:
